Sustainable Girls’ Outfits with Beet World

Beet World clothing

Perhaps it is because I grew up with my grandparents, who lived through famine and poverty in World War II torn Russia, that frugality is so instilled in me. I was taught that wastefulness was wrong and reminded daily how lucky we were to have what we did. Back then I did not realize the value of those lessons, but now I deeply appreciate them as an adult and mother.

As Christmas season is upon us, with consumerism at its peak, I increasingly think about how to pass on those lessons of moderation and frugality to my own children.

It is a good idea to start with the toys they play with and the clothes they wear. Instead of buying things that are used only once, I try to make a conscious decision to purchase items with an extended life expectancy. For toys that means open ended games and items that can be played with over and over.  When it comes to clothes, it can be difficult to find kids’ clothing brands that offer adorable styles, but also great quality at an affordable price.

Ironically, the holiday season is the prime example of wastefulness. We all have purchased “Christmas” outfits that kids can wear exactly one time before they are given or thrown away. Wouldn’t it be much better, if we chose outfits that our kiddos can not only wear to Holiday events, but also for their everyday activities?

Beet World – Distinctive. Beautiful. Natural.

Beet World offers exactly that! It succeeds in creating clothing that is beautiful in style while being appropriate for both everyday wear and special moments. And the best part is that Beet World combines the durability of quality material with comfort and style, while keeping prices under $50!

I chose the Adelaide Dress in Mulberry Gingham for Christmas photos and various other Holiday events. Charlie is obsessed with this dress and insists on wearing it all the time! She enjoys the soft material, which is 100% cotton double voile, and the comfortable, but twirly, fit. I, on the other hand, love that the dress holds up to so many washes and looks simply darling on my little.

The Hadley top is another favorite of mine. From the darling wild flower print to the ruffled collar and rose colored velvet trim, it is as beautiful as it is easy to wear every day.

Charlie, as most two year olds, does not tolerate uncomfortable or restricting clothes, no matter what  holiday or occasion it might be. Her dresses and tops have to be comfy and durable to withstand the multitude of stains that inevitably happen. Speaking from first hand experience, Beet World outfits do not shrink in the washing machine and look and feel exactly the same as on the first day.

Quality over Fast Fashion

The durability of the clothing allows for repeated wear and playtime fun and that is what I am looking for in kids clothes.

I am grateful for companies, such as Beet World, that believe in sustainable production practices by minimizing the use of artificial fibers and materials in our clothing and packaging.  All garments are sourced from a single, family-owned factory in India that has been manufacturing and exporting cotton garments for over 40 years. The owner, local business woman Ashima Singhal, also gives back 1% of net sales to organizations dedicated to promote education and literacy among children and women.

This Holiday season, and every day, let us slowly steer away from purchasing “disposable” clothing for our littles and start value and quality shopping, one outfit at a time! Read more

Spring/Summer 2017 Fashion Trends: Dress Edition

StyleWe floral dress

There are so many fun fashion trends this spring and summer season that it can get overwhelming. Which ones will look best on me? Which trends should I avoid? And then the age-old dilemma: What might look great on a size 0 model in magazines might not translate as well into our every day lives and onto our “real” bodies.

But no worries – I tested the top dress trends and am sharing my must-have dresses of this spring and summer season with you. All dresses in this series are approved for style and wearability – may it be a special occasion or just a trip to the grocery store. Looking trendy this season is a cinch with these gorgeous dresses.

floral dress with ruffles - top dress trends for spring and summer 2017

Spring/Summer Fashion Trend No. 1 : Ruffles and Flounces

This trend is hands down my favorite this fashion season as it allows us to be feminine and flirty at the same time. Everywhere you look you can find ruffles attached to almost any clothing item right now, ruffled tops, dresses, and even bottoms.

Ruffles and flounces are such a fun addition to your wardrobe because they add a touch of airiness and playfulness to any outfit, if used in moderation. However, it is easy to go overboard with this trend and ending up looking like a Flamenco dancer – not a good look unless you have the dance skills to back it. Hence, it is crucial to keep the rest of the outfit sleek and simple, and let the ruffled piece be the showstopper. Another fun way of wearing this trend is with menswear-inspired pieces, such as a pinstripe blazer. Mixing feminine style with a masculine touch creates an interesting balance for an outfit.

The dress I chose from StyleWe is a great example how a little flounce can go a long way. The double layered bell sleeves and the slightly ruffled hem add movement and just the right amount of femininity to the dress. I also enjoy the material as it is light enough to move with every step, which makes it oh so fun to wear and twirl in.

Spring/Summer Fashion Trend No. 2 : Florals from head to toe

Another spring trend is the dress pattern – florals for spring! Groundbreaking, I know. But why reinvent the wheel? Florals are a classic staple and the black background provides a sophisticated chicness to the otherwise playful pattern.

While the dress makes a statement, the accessories are kept to a minimum by adding open-toe booties and a glam pair of tassel earrings to the outfit.

I hope the ruffles and flounce trend will stick around for a while, as it is truly one of the most fun fashion trends to follow! And stay tuned for the next fashion trends coming up in a future post!

How to Wear Non-Maternity Clothing when Pregnant

Maternity Fashion

As my previous posts suggest, I am quite the bargain shopper and hate spending money on clothing without versatility or multiple uses. Therefore, I remember cringingly buying maternity clothes when I was pregnant with my son seven years ago. Knowing that my investment will be short lived before I stash the outfits far, far away, I didn’t see the use in purchasing many maternity clothes.

Not much has changed the second time around. Except a couple of maternity jeans and TWO maternity tops, I managed to utilize my existing wardrobe for pregnancy outfits. I also purchased new items, but instead of shopping for maternity clothes, I stuck to items that I can wear throughout my pregnancy and afterwards, as well.

Partnering up with Seattle Goodwill, I want to show how you can avoid buying a whole new maternity wardrobe by staying in your regular clothing much longer than you would expect. If you ask me, it makes perfect sense to shop at a thrift/consignment shop, or even better at Goodwill, for maternity clothing. Since the items are almost brand new because they were worn for only a few months, expecting moms can take advantage of the low prices and save their money for the many baby expenses.

Here are some tips on how to turn your wardrobe into pregnancy-friendly outfits by stretching it through nine pregnancy months:

  1.  Make stretchy fabrics your best friend! It may seem counterintuitive, but dressing your preggo body in close-fitting clothes is actually flattering. Don’t make the mistake of buying clothes two sizes up because the rest of your body stays (mostly) the same after giving birth and your arms won’t grow, I promise. Instead stick with bodycon and knit dresses that show off your baby bump in all its glory and give you room to grow. There will come a point during every pregnancy when it becomes impossible to camouflage it anyway, so why not make it the focal point?
  2. Get yourself a pant extender! It’s a couple of bucks well spent, when you can literally stretch your favorite jeans and pants; at least for a few months. The only thing to consider is to wear long, preferably flowy tops to make sure you don’t flash anyone due to the open zipper.
  3. Speaking of flowy tops…and long sweaters and tunics. Buy them, wear them, cherish them! They will become your go-to pieces to change up your maternity style from casual to dressy and everything in between.
  4. Accessorize your outfits! Who said pregnant women can’t have fun with fashion trends? I am totally obsessed with the current velvet trend and hunted a pair of merlot velvet booties down that are not only fashionable, but also comfortable. Mamas, we can have it all! Just make sure your booties or shoes have a stacked, lower heel for comfort and no trend is safe!
  5. Throw on a leather jacket, faux or genuine, to pull your outfit together and give it more edge. Don’t mind the fact that you can’t zip it up. Jackets have become purely decorative at this point. Long vests are a chic alternative to leather jackets, and can be even more flattering for pregnant curves.

And here are a few wardrobe staples that you simply must get from the maternity department. For an inexpensive alternative, check out Goodwill’s maternity section for some amazing finds:

– black tights/pantyhose are lifesavers for hiding all those pesky spider and varicose veins pregnant women are “blessed” with

– one or two great pair of jeans that you will live in. Now is the time to splurge, if you feel like it! You can’t put a value on a great fitting pair of maternity pants that don’t slide off, don’t cut your belly off, and look amazing on you. It might take some time to find the perfect pair, but when you do, life will become much better.

– maternity leggings to wear with your plethora of non-maternity long tops and sweaters

Enjoy this special time, ladies, and have fun dressing your baby bumps!!!

Laura Britt Shoes

Every once in a while you find a clothing item that is flawless. I am talking about the perfect combination of looks and comfort that you will be wearing until it is old and torn. You know instantaneously that it will be your favorite item in your closet and your ride or die through the season.

Of course, such an anomaly doesn’t come along very often, but I found it in a pair of Laura Britt shoes. Not only are these lace-ups – the Midcentury Atomic, to be exact – super cute, but I can also wear them with a variety of outfits. From a casual t-shirt and jeans look to a girly sundress (as in this video here), the possibilities are endless.  And let’s not forget the affordable price of $39.99!

Now, let me tell you a bit about the comfort: Before I tried this pair of Laura Britt shoes, I was convinced that every pair of lace-up sneakers feels about the same on your feet. I was so wrong! As soon as you slide your foot into the shoe, you notice the padded foot liner, and even tongue and collar. Comfort was so integral in the making of this shoe that elastic side bands were added for more slip-on ease, so you don’t have to untie the shoes every time.

Every pair of Laura Britt shoes was carefully crafted with the wearer’s comfort and style in mind.  This is not where my love for this local Seattle company stops, however, as there is even more goodness! By buying a pair of Laura Britt shoes the net profits are donated to Young Life Ministry, as well as to Cleveland Clinic for vascular research.

The owner, Helen Little, went through a life-changing battle with a rare disease that inspired her to create Laura Britt and give back to the community that means so much to her. I have had the opportunity of meeting this amazing woman behind the shoe brand and hear her motivation and joy for what she does. Please read Helen’s inspiring story here to find out for yourself!

Take a look at the fabulous collection below, which has something for every taste. And with the football season around the corner, why not snag a pair of the Seahawks – blue and green colored espadrilles? I know I will.

Make sure to also check out the fun commercial I collaborated with your favorite Seattle fashion bloggers 🙂  Watch the commercials here and here!

It is time to invest in lives … step by step!

Delicate Statement Necklaces

One question that I always hear as a Stella & Dot stylist is about my own favorite jewelry pieces. So today I want to show you some of my all time favorite accessories that I can’t live without.

I love big statement necklaces and the way they can transform even the most bland outfits. However, as they can be cumbersome to wear all day, I usually prefer delicate jewelry on the daily. Cue, my favorite delicate statement necklaces!
Just as big statement necklaces, their smaller cousins pack a big punch, but are much smaller and easier to wear. Another advantage of delicate necklaces is that they don’t overpower petite ladies, and still have a great impact on the outfit.

Here I am sharing my two favorite delicate necklaces that I simply don’t want to take off:

The gold plated Stone Tile Necklace with hand-set lapis stones is a stunner dressed up or down. Wear it with a neutral colored shirt for a casual look, or pair it with a royal blue lace top as I did for the biggest impact.

Stella&Dot necklaceStella&Dot stone tile necklace 3

I adore how the different shades of blue complement each other, while the sparkle adds just the right amount of glam to this beauty. But my favorite part about this micro-mosaic necklace is its 2-in-1 versatility: By detaching the bottom pendant it converts into a more subtle arc necklace, and gives you even more ways to incorporate it into your wardrobe.

|| Gold Ring: Turquoise Stacked Ring | Ear Studs: Deja Vu Stone Studs in turquoise | Gold Cuffs: Turquoise Stone Cuff and Diamante Cuff ||

The second delicate statement necklace is a silver-plated collar necklace, with the perfectly fitting name “Swag”. The modern and sleek style can match a variety of  outfits, while always adding an understated elegance. A semi-precious howlite triangle shaped drop makes this show-stopper even more special.

Stella&Dot swag necklace Stella&Dot swag necklace

Since these necklaces are so delicate, there is little risk of “overdoing” it with accessories. Thus, I like to finish my jewelry look with silver hoop earrings and a bracelet stack, as I am sporting the “Swag” collar.

When wearing the Stone Tile necklace, I love picking up the turquoise color and match with the same color ring and studs. But, of course, it is always a chic choice to let the necklace speak on its own.

Let it Snow-Boots!

I am so excited about all the snow we are getting in the mountains here in Washington! A couple of weekends ago we made a short trip up to Stevens Pass and had the best time playing in the snow! We brought along a sled for the little one and just had a blast!

I adore the snow, but the inevitable cold that comes with it, I can do without. Nobody enjoys frozen toes and red cherry noses are cute on Santa only .

Lucky for me, I was wearing my Northside Kathmandu Snow Boots and did not have to worry about the freezing temperatures. Throughout the whole day my feet stayed nice and toasty, even when we were stomping through knee high snow at one point. The waterproof suede and fluffy fur lining kept me warm in frigid Cascade weather (rated to a scary -25 degrees F; not that I ever want to experience those kind of temperatures)!

The best part about the Northside Kathmandu Snow Boots is that my feet felt comfortable all day long, which is not a small deal when it comes to boots.  Heavy duty snow boots usually trade in comfort for functionality and durability. Fortunately, that is not the case with my Northside Kathmandu Snow Boots! Also, I did not even have to break them in because they are comfy from day 1.

Not that I have to mention it, but I am anyway:  they look flipping adorable!!! I see myself wearing them to all outdoor events this season, from the New Year’s Eve fireworks show to weekend trips to the mountains.

Based in Marysville, Washington, Northside is an independent, family owned and operated business with a mission to create product that allows us to get outside and enjoy all nature has to offer.  Northside footwear offers the features and quality of higher-priced brands, without the high price tag.

Saving on money without giving up quality? Sign me up. My son and husband are up next for some snow boots and I am so happy that Northside offers amazing footwear not only for women, but for the whole family.

My Northside Kathmandu Snow Boots are available at Fred Meyer Stores and many other retailers in our neighborhood, and also on Amazon !!!

I saved the best for last: Northside is generously offering a pair of Northside Kathmandu Snow Boots to one of my followers!

Find out all the details about this awesome giveaway on my Instagram page! Make sure to enter and you might be the next lucky lady with cozy toes 😉 The giveaway is closed. Thank you to everyone participating!

Stay warm, friends!

Rainy Day Outfit

Rainy day outfit

The rain is an inevitable part of spring time here in the Pacific Northwest.  I, and most Seattleites, have a love hate relationship with rain: I enjoy grey, gloomy days spent cuddled up at home, but quickly grow tired of my entire life being limited to inside activities. This is the conundrum we face every year. Do I go outside and be miserable in the rain or do I lock myself in the house? I believe, there is a 3rd, better option!

I partnered up with Fred Meyer to show you a Rainy Day Outfit that can withstand even the Pacific Northwest dreariness.

Enjoying a day in the rain, your outfit needs to be comfortable, and nothing says comfort to me than a great pair of jeans. The Levi’s jeans I picked up at Freddy’s are perfect, from the comfortable mid rise to just the right amount of stretch. I owned a pair of Levi’s 501s back in middle school that I absolutely adored, and I still feel the same about my new pair of Levi’s. Quality truly never goes out of style, and under $40 it is the best deal I have seen in ages!

I paired my new jeans with a cozy long sleeve shirt in my favorite color, green. But if green is not your thing, no worries because Fred Meyer offers similar shirts in every color imaginable. I knew Freddy’s was a great place to get groceries, but I was amazed at all the clothing I was able to find at my local store as well.

The most crucial part of a rainy day outfit has to be a good pair of rain boots, or galoshes, if you prefer. I was immediately head over heels for this cheery pair of Western Chief rain boots, as soon as I saw them on the shelf. Frankly, it was not easy to pick a favorite pair of boots because of the huge selection my Fred Meyer store offers. But in the end, the fun blossoms on the rubber boots won me over.

I realize that locals are turning up their noses at my umbrella right at this moment.  That is because “real” Seattleites don’t own such preposterous knickknacks. I get it, but let’s be real… everybody needs a good umbrella, and this one has a fun bubble shape. I don’t use an umbrella on a daily basis, but sometimes you just want to avoid dealing with the frizz your hair turns into under a hoodie, ya know?

I can see myself wearing this outfit to many occasions in the near future, from Easter egg hunts and farm visits to the upcoming Skagit Tulip Festival. And a little drizzle is definitely not going to ruin the fun this time.

Stay dry, loves!

ThredUp Spring Dress

Having the Gracious’ Spring Fling Soiree (find all the details about the Spring Fling here) coming up, I needed a classy, but fun dress to wear. I have heard so many good things about ThredUp, so this was the perfect opportunity to shop the online consignment shop.

After browsing on the website, I decided on this gorgeous Betsey Johnson silk dress that was 80% off retail, bringing the price to under $35! Besides scoring an amazing deal, I also carried the vintage theme on by wearing a thrifted dress to a vintage furnishings store event. Perfect!

I love the classic A-line silhouette of this dress and its sweetheart neckline.  The cute pink and green floral pattern truly pops on the black silk, as it strikes the perfect balance between sweet and daring.  I wore this dress with a black faux leather jacket (not pictured) and pink suede lace-up sandals, which picked up the pink from the dress pattern.

A soiree is not the only event I can see myself wearing this Betsey Johnson dress to, as I would wear this dress to a summer wedding with some sparkly jewelry, or a jeans jacket for a casual dinner date. In the cooler months, I would pair the silk  dress with black tights and a wool cardigan to transition it into my fall and winter wardrobe. The possibilities seem endless and I am excited to incorporate this gem of a dress into my outfit rotation.

ThredUP is the largest online consignment and thrift store and makes it incredibly easy to refresh your wardrobe on a budget. The way it works is you browse their huge inventory of brand name clothing, and accessories, which are up to 90% off the original price. Once you picked your items online, ThredUp sends them to your doorstep in the cutest dotted packaging.

And if you think we are talking about moth-eaten, out-of-date silk blouses with shoulder pads, think again! Each item is hand inspected and certified for quality, which assures that only the best clothing items are offered to you, meaning if an item doesn’t meet the highest quality standards, ThredUp won’t accept it. All items are “Practically New,” which means that they are free of ANY defect and function just as they did when they were originally purchased. And since ThredUp wants you to love your purchase, it even offers a return policy, in case your clothing does not fit perfectly. Try to return something to your local thrift store, I dare you!

Besides the great value and excellent customer service, what I appreciate the most about ThredUp is their commitment to sustainability. Buying and reselling used high-quality clothing relieves that recycling guilt we all have by lightening our family’s carbon-footprint. Moreover, ThredUp encourages us to live in a more collective, sharing economy and become a more conscious consumer one order at a time.

Happy online thrifting!!

xoxo,

Olga

Thank you to my doll, Victoria West Photography, for capturing these photographs.

Cocoon Coat – the Fall Must-Have

cocoon coat

||Cocoon Coat: Topshop Amelia Slouch Coat | Shirt: Emerald Cuff (sold out) | Jeggings: Black High Waisted Distressed Knee Jean Leggings | Shoes: Loslandifen Shoes | Necklace: Stella&Dot Aria Pendant Necklace ||

Every woman has those few staples in her wardrobe that make her feel warm and cozy: The perfect knit sweater, a big fluffy scarf to hide in on those dreary February days, or a great pair of riding boots.

In my case, I need a coat that I can rely on to wear anytime, anywhere and with everything. I have owned many coats in my life time, from classic wool coats to double breasted trench coats. So this season, I chose a slouchy cocoon coat from Topshop as my ride and die for the winter months.

The name of the cocoon coat alone emanates a feeling of protection and comfort, something that I ultimately seek for when the days are getting colder. And this coat definitely lives up to its name. With its relaxed fit and oversized collar, it is the perfect addition to any winter outfit.

Although, the cocoon coat is universally flattering, I would like to share a few tricks how to look your best in it:

  1. Wear sleek bottoms – Balance the coat’s slouchy fit with a pair of jeggings or your favorite pencil skirt
  2. Wear high heels – Elongate your legs by wearing high heels, unless you have modelesque long legs, of course
  3. Wear layered tops – Take advantage of the extra room underneath your cocoon coat and layer shirts, blouses, and sweaters to your heart’s content

And most importantly, cuddle up in your warm new coat with a cup of hot coffee, while braving the cold outside!

Olga
